There are TWO main formats for Video’s : PAL UK and NTSC US.  There are players that can play both standards available many of the newer models are able to play BOTH. Older players may ONLY play one standard. There are also 8 REGIONS and Region free DVD's.

There is also 'Region 0' which technically is not a 'Region'. This is used to designate that a DVD disc is not Region Locked at all. It is a common misconception that because a DVD disc is Region Free, it will play on any player. The actual video format of the disc also needs to be correct. In the USA is NTSC, and in Europe is PAL.
